Protect your password in cyber cafe and on public computers

Some time or the other, you must have used cyber dafe or public computers to access internet or mail.
Public computers are most prone to password hacking. Anyone can simply install a keylogger software to hack your password. Keylogging is one of the most insidious threats to a user's personal information. Passwords, credit card numbers etc. It is now very easy for the keylogger to harvest passwords. Each and every keystroke (whatever you type on the keyboard) gets recorded in the keylogger software and the person installing it can easily view what you have typd in. For example, if you go to hotmail.com and check your mails. Say your ID is sarahj7@hotmail.com and password is snoopy2. the keylogger software records your usename and password in its log file as
Microsoft Internet Explorer :
www.hotmail.comsarahj7@hotmail.comsnoopy2
Or
Firefox:
www.hotmail.comsarahj7@hotmail.comsnoopy2

Risky isnt it???!!!
There's solution to this problem and you can easily fool the hacker.
The keylogger software sees and records everything, but it doesn't understand what it sees. I t does not know what to do with keys that are typed anywhere other than the password or user name fields.

So,between successive keys of the password if you enter random keys, the keylogger software wont ever come to konw where you typed in what..
In the process of recording the keys, the string that the keylogger receives will contain the password, but embedded in so much random junk that discovering it is infeasible.
So...

1.Go to hotmail.com or yahoo.com or any of the site where you need to insert a password or PIN.
2.Type in your user ID.
3. Type in the first characterof the password.
4. Click on the address bar in the internet explorer or Firefox. Type in some 3/4 random charachters.
5. Again go to password field and type in the second character of the password. And probably third too.
6. Again go to the addressbar and type in a few mroe random character.
7. Back to the password field and the next characters of the password.
Keep on repeatin the process till you type in the full password in the password field.

Instead of the password
snoopy2 the keylogger now gets:
hotmail.comspqmlainsdgsosdgfsodgfdpuouuyhdg2
Here a total of 26 random characters have been inserted among the 7 characters of the actual password!!!

No doubt it takes a little bit of more time than the usual process, but you're safe and secure that way!!!

Top 20 Tips To Keep Your System Faster Part 2

Follow these tips and you will definitely have a much faster and more reliable PC!

11. Take your PC to Bed:  Using the Advanced Power Management feature under Windows 98 gives you the option to use the sleep command.  That way, you can send your PC to sleep instead of shutting it down and then restarting it.  It's as simple as pressing a button and then pressing the same button to wake it up.  You can tell Windows after how many minutes/hours of inactivity to automatically sleep the machine in the Advanced Power Management section of the Control Panel.

12. Faster Internet Access: If you use the internet for reference and the sites you visit are rarely  updated then try the following.  In IE (the same can be done in Netscape) go to Tools, Internet Options.  Next, click on Settings... in the Temporary Internet Files  section.  Finally, select Never for the first option and double the amount of storage space to use, click OK!

13. Benchmarking: Benchmarking can be very useful when run frequently.  It can tell you how your PC's components are performing and then compare them to other machines like yours.  For example, when you overclock your PC, you want to know how much more speed you have and whether it is stable.  All this and more can be discovered using benchmarking.  An excellent piece of software for doing this job is SiSoft Sandra which can be found in the Downloads File Archive!

14. Refresh the Taskbar without restarting: If you in some way change the taskbar, either in Regedit or elsewhere, you can refresh the task bar without restarting.  Hold down Ctrl Alt Del, and double click on Explorer.  Say Yes to close Explorer, but no to closing Windows.  This will refresh the Taskbar and system tray.

15. Quick CD Eject: Instead of pushing the button on your drive, right-click your CD drive letter in My Computer and click on Eject.  This will also remove any icons that have become associated with the CD drive.

16. Start Up Programs:  Windows can be slowed down when programs run on start up.  To eliminate this, check your Start up folder.  You can access it from the start menu: Start, Programs, Start Up.  Another way to eliminate programs from loading even before Windows actually starts is by doing the following: Click on Start, then Run.  Type msconfig.  It will take quite a long time for this program to load, but when you finally see it on your screen, explore the different tabs.  They all have to do with how quickly your PC boots, so select what you want, and uncheck what you don't want!

17. Fonts: When Windows starts, it loads every single font in the Fonts folder.  Therefore, the more fonts you have, the slower the booting process.  To get rid of unwanted fonts, simply go to the Fonts folder under c:\windows and remove whatever you don't want.  Fonts that have a red letter 'A' as their icon are system fonts, so don't delete them.

18. Stretching Wallpapers:  Don't "stretch" your wallpaper in Windows 98 since it actually slows Windows down when you drag icons around on the desktop.

19. RAM Matters: If you have less than 32MB then you should seriously think of upgrading it to at least 64MB.  Windows runs much more smoothly with 64MB or higher and tends to use less hard disk space for virtual memory.

20. Partitioning: A very nice little thing you can do to boost system performance.  By partitioning your hard drive, splitting one physical drive into several logical ones, you can gain several advantages.  1. If you get a virus or you accidentally format a drive, not all will be lost.  2. By placing the swap file (Win386.swp) on a separate drive, The swap file will be less fragmented and thus, faster. 3. Place Windows on a separate drive and whenever you need to reinstall it, you rest assured that your data is safe on a separate drive.  Partitioning can be done using a few programs such as FDisk which comes with DOS.  However, FDisk formats everything on the hard disk before partitioning. Alternatively, you can use Partition Magic from Power Quest to partition your hard disk without losing your data.

Auto End Tasks to Enable a Proper Shutdown

This reg file automatically ends tasks and timeouts that prevent programs from shutting down and clears the Paging File on Exit.

1. Copy the following (everything in the box) into notepad.

QUOTE
Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Session Manager\Memory Management]
"ClearPageFileAtShutdown"=dword:00000001

[HKEY_USERS\.DEFAULT\Control Panel\Desktop]
"AutoEndTasks"="1"

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control]
"WaitToKillServiceTimeout"="1000"

2. Save the file as shutdown.reg
3. Double click the file to import into your registry.

NOTE: If your anti-virus software warns you of a "malicious" script, this is normal if you have "Script Safe" or similar technology enabled.

Top 20 Tips To Keep Your System Faster Part 1

1. Wallpapers: They slow your whole system down, so if you're willing to compromise, have a basic plain one instead!

2. Drivers: Update your hardware drivers as frequently as possible.  New drivers tend to increase system speed especially in the case of graphics cards, their drivers are updated by the manufacturer very frequently!

3. Minimizing: If you want to use several programs at the same time then minimize those you are not using.  This helps reduce the overload on RAM.

4. Boot Faster: The 'starting Windows 95/98' message on startup can delay your booting for a couple of seconds.  To get rid of this message go to c:\ and find the file Msdos.sys.  Remove the Read-Only option.  Next, open it in Notepad or any other text editor.  Finally, go to the text 'Options' within the file and make the following changes: Add BootDelay=0.  To make your booting even faster, set add Logo=0 to remove the Windows logo at startup.

5. Restart only Windows: When restarting your PC, hold down Shift to only restart Windows rather than the whole system which will only take a fraction of the time.

6. Turn Off Animations:  Go to Display Settings from the Control Panel and switch to the Effects Tab. Now turn off Show Windows Content While Dragging and Smooth Edges on Screen Fonts.  This tip is also helpful with Windows XP because of the various fade/scroll effects.

7. Faster Start-Menu Access: Go to the Start menu and select Run.  Now type Regedit and hit Enter.  The Registry Editor will appear on the screen.  Now, open the folder HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\Desktop.  You should see a MenuShowDelay value.  If you don't then do the following: right click on a blank space in the right pane and select New\String.  Change the name in the new value to MenuShowDelay.  Now that we have the MenuShowDelay value, double click on it and enter 0 in the value data field.  This sets the start menu delay to 0 milliseconds.

8. Resolutions: If you are willing to do anything for faster performance from your PC, then try lowering your display resolution.  The lower it is, the faster your PC.

9. Turn off Active Desktop:  Go to your Display Properties and switch to the Web tab.  Uncheck View My Active Desktop As a Web Page.  Since the Active Desktop option under Windows 98 uses a lot of system resources, this option can have a dramatic effect on the speed of the whole system.

10. Defragment Often:  Windows 98's Defrag tool uses Application Acceleration from Intel which means that when you defragment your drive, data is physically arranged on the drive so that applications will load faster.

What is a Firewall?

What is a Firewall?
A firewall is a tool that monitors communication to and from your computer. It sits between your computer and the rest of the network, and according to some criteria, it decides which communication to allow, and which communication to block. It may also use some other criteria to decide about which communication or communication request to report to you (either by adding the information to a log file that you may browse whenever you wish, or in an alert message on the screen), and what not to report.

What Is It Good For?
Identifying and blocking remote access Trojans. Perhaps the most common way to break into a home computer and gain control, is by using a remote access Trojan (RAT). (sometimes it is called "backdoor Trojan" or "backdoor program". Many people simply call it a "Trojan horse" although the term "Trojan horse" is much more generic). A Trojan horse, is a program that claims to do something really innocent, but in fact does something much less innocent. This goes to the days where the Greek soldiers succeeded to enter through the gates of Troy by building a big wooden horse, and giving it as a present to the king of Troy. The soldiers allowed the sculpture to enter through their gates, and then at night, when the soldiers were busy guarding against an outside attack, many Greek soldiers who were hiding inside the horse went out and attacked Troy from the inside. This story, which may or may not be true, is an example of something which looks like something innocent and is used for some less innocent purpose. The same thing happens in computers. You may sometimes get some program, via ICQ, or via Usenet, or via IRC, and believe this program to be something good, while in fact running it will do something less nice to your computer. Such programs are called Trojan horses. It is accepted to say that the difference between a Trojan horse and a virus, is that a virus has the ability to self-replicate and to distribute itself, while a Trojan horse lacks this ability. A special type of Trojan horses, is RATs (Remote Access Trojans, some say "remote admin Trojans"). These Trojans once executed in the victim's computer, start to listen to incoming communication from a remote matching program that the attacker uses. When they get instructions from the remote program, they act accordingly, and thus let the user of the remote program to execute commands on the victim's computer. To name a few famous RATs, the most common are Netbus, Back-Orifice, and SubSeven (which is also known as Backdoor-G). In order for the attacker to use this method, your computer must first be infected by a RAT.
Prevention of infections by RATs is no different than prevention of infection by viruses. Antivirus programs can identify and remove most of the more common RATs. Personal firewalls can identify and block remote communication efforts to the more common RATs and by thus blocking the attacker, and identifying the RAT.

Blocking/Identifying Other Types of Trojans and WQorms?
There are many other types of Trojan horses which may try to communicate with the outside from your computer. Whether they are e-mail worms trying to distribute themselves using their own SMTP engine, or they might be password stealers, or anything else. Many of them can be identified and blocked by a personal firewall.

Identifying/Blocking Spyware's/Adbots?
The term "spyware" is a slang which is not well defined. It is commonly used mainly for various adware (and adware is a program that is supported by presenting advertisements to the user), and that during their installation process, they install an independent program which we shall call "adbot". The adbot runs independently even if the hosting adware is not running, and it maintains the advertisements, downloads them from the remote server, and provides information to the remote server. The adbot is usually hidden. There are many companies that offer adbots, and advertisements services to adware. The information that the adbots deliver to their servers from the computer where the adbot is installed, is "how much time each advertisement is shown, which was the hosting adware, and whether the user clicked on the advertisement. This is important so that the advertisements server will be able to know how much money to get from each of the advertised companies, and how much from it to deliver to each of the adware maintainers. Some of the adbots also collect other information in order to better choose the advertisements to the users. The term "spyware" is more generic, but most of the spyware fall into this category. Many types of adbots can be identified and blocked by personal firewalls.

Blocking Advertisements?
Some of the better personal firewalls can be set to block communication with specific sites. This can be used in order to prevent downloading of advertisements in web pages, and thus to accelerate the download process of the web sites. This is not a very common use of a personal firewall, though.

Preventing Communication to Tracking Sites?
Some web pages contain references to tracking sites. e.g. instruct the web browser to download a small picture (sometimes invisible) from tracking sites. Sometimes, the pictures are visible and provide some statistics about the site. Those tracking sites will try to save a small text either as a small file in a special directory, or as a line in a special file (depending on what is your browser), and your browser will usually allow the saving site to read the text that it saved on your computer. This is called "web cookies" or sometimes simply "cookies". Cookies allow a web site to keep information that it saved some time when you entered it, to be read whenever you enter the site again. This allow the web site to customize itself for you, and to keep track on everything that you did on that site. It does not have to keep that information on your computer. All it has to save on your computer is a unique identifying number, and then it can keep in the server's side information regarding what has been done by the browser that used that cookie. Yet, by this method, a web site can get only information regarding your visits in it. Some sites such as "doubleclick" or "hitbox" can collect information from various affiliated sites, by putting a small reference in the affiliated pages to some picture on their servers. When you enter one of the affiliated web pages, your browser will communicate with the tracking site, and this will allow the tracking site to put or to read a cookie that identifies your computer uniquely, and it can also know what was the web page that referred to it, and any other information that the affiliated web site wanted to deliver to the tracking site. This way tracking sites can correlate information from many affiliated sites, to build information that for example will allow them to better customize the advertisements that are put on those sites when you browse them.
Some personal firewalls can be set to block communication to tracking sites. It is not a common use of a personal firewall, though, and a personal firewall is not the best tool for that, but if you already have one, this is yet another possible use of it.

Blocking or Limiting the NetBIOS Communication? (as well as other default services)
The two common methods of intruders to break into home computers, are through a RAT (which was discussed in II.3a) and through the NetBIOS communication. The NetBIOS is a standard for naming computers in small networks, developed long ago by IBM and Microsoft. There are a few communication standards which are used in relation to the NetBIOS. The ones that are relevant for Microsoft Windows operating systems, are: NBT (NetBIOS over TCP/IP), IPX/SPX, and NetBEUI. The communication standard which is used over the Internet, is NBT. If it is enabled, and there is no firewall or something else in the middle, it means that your computer is listening for communications over the Internet via this standard, and will react according to the different NBT commands that it gets from the remote programs. It is thus that the NBT (which sometimes loosely called "NetBIOS") is acting as a server. So the next question should be "what remote NBT commands the NBT server will do on the local computer". The answer to this question depends on the specific setting on your computer. You may set your computer to allow file and print sharing. If also NBT is enabled, it means that you allow remote users to share your files or printers. This is a big problem. It is true that in principle the remote user has to know your password for that computer, but many users do not set a password for their user on Windows, or set a trivial password. Older versions of Win95 had file and print sharing over NetBIOS enabled by default. On Win98, and WinMe it was disabled by default, but many technicians, when they set a home network, they enable the file and print sharing, without being aware that it influences also the authorizations of a remote Internet user. There are even worms and viruses who use the File sharing option to spread in the Internet. Anyway, no matter whether you need it for some reason or just are not aware of it, a personal firewall can identify and block any external effort to communicate with the NetBIOS server on your computer. The more flexible personal firewalls can be set to restrict the authorization to communicate with the NetBIOS. Some Windows operating systems, especially those which are not meant for home uses, offer other public services by default, such as RPC. A firewall can identify communication efforts to them, and block them. Since such services listen to remote communications, there is a potential risk when there are efforts to exploit security holes in the programs that offer the services, if there are such security holes. A firewall may block or limit the communication to those services.

Hiding Your Computer on the Internet?
Without a firewall, on a typical computer, even if well maintained, a remote person will still be able to know that the communication effort has reached some computer, and perhaps some information about the operating system on that computer. If that computer is handled well, the remote user will not be able to get much more information from your computer, but might still be able to identify also who your ISP is, and might decide to invest further time in cracking into your computer.
With a firewall, you can set the firewall so that any communication effort from remote users (in the better firewalls you may define an exception list) will not be responded at all. This way the remote user will not be able to even know that it reached a live computer. This might discourage the remote attacker from investing further time in effort to crack into your computer.

The Non-Firewall Defenses

We've discussed a few situations where a personal firewall can provide defense. Yet, in many cases a computer maintainer can deal with those situations even without a firewall. Those "alternative" defenses, in many cases are recommended regardless of whether you use a firewall or not.

How to update BIOS?

How to update BIOS?

You can download and install updated BIOS for your mainboard from the manufacturer's web site. New BIOS provides support for new peripherals, improvement in performance, or fixes for known bugs. Install new BIOS as follows:

 - If your mainboard has a BIOS protection jumper, change the setting to allow BIOS flashing.

- If your mainboard has an item called Firmware Write Protect in Advanced BIOS features, disable it. (It prevents BIOS from being overwritten).

- Create a bootable system disk.

- Download the flash utility and new BIOS files from the manufacturer's web site. Copy these files to the system diskette you created in step 3.

- Turn off your computer and insert the system diskette in your computer's diskette drive. (You might need to run the setup utility and change the boot priority items on the Advanced BIOS Features Setup page, to force your computer to boot from the diskette drive first.)

- At the A:\ prompt, type the Flash utilty program name and press Enter.

- Type the filename of the new BIOS in the "File Name to program" text box. Follow the directions to update the mainboard BIOS.

- When installation is complete, remove the floppy diskette from the diskette drive and then restart your computer. If your mainboard has a Flash BIOS jumper, reset the jumper to protect the newly installed BIOS from being overwritten

About BIOS, Basic Input and Output System

The BIOS setup utility displays the system's configuration status and provides you with options to set system parameters. The parameters are stored in battery backed up CMOS RAM that saves this information when the power is turned off. When the system is turned back on the system is configured with the value you stored in CMOS.

A standard configuration has already been set in the setup utility. The setup utility should be used when:

 - changing the system configuration

- a configuration error detected and you are prompted to make changes to the setup utility

- trying to resolve IRQ conflicts

- making changes to the Power management configuration.

- changing the password or making other changes to the Security Setup.

How to Make Disk Cleanup Compress Files in Windows XP?

We are always in need of more
hard drive space on our computer.
The feature of Disk Cleanup
compress files in Windows XP is
very useful for attaining this goal.
Disk Cleanup cleans up the files in
addition to restore some space in
the operating system. It deletes the
temporary files. The feature of Disk
Cleanup Compress Files in Windows
XP gives you the opportunity to
compress old files. By default, the
Disk Cleanup compress files in XP
which are older than fifty days.
Sometimes you don't want the Disk
Cleanup compress files in XP that
are older than fifty days. You would
just like to compress very old files
e.g. the files older than 120 days. In
that case, you can alter the settings
of the Disk Cleanup utility in
Windows XP.
In order to use the Disk Cleanup
utility you have to follow these
simple steps:
Open My Computer.
Right click on any one of the hard
drives.
Select Properties.
The following dialog box will appear.
Click on Disk Cleanup.
The hard drive will be scanned to
find out how much of space can be
saved. Under the "Files to Delete"
list, select Compress old files.
Click on the Options button.
The Compress Old Files dialog box
will appear. Change the number of
days to wait for older files to be
compressed.
Click on the OK button.
You can also change the number of
days to wait for newer files to be
compressed. In that case, you will
have to change the amount of days
to a lesser number e.g. 30 days.

Tips on Mobile Maintenance

Tips on Mobile Maintenance
Looking after your mobile helps to
ensure it has a long and productive
life. There are 8 easy maintenance
tips to help you get the best out of
your mobile phone. All of the points
below should also apply to
your battery, charger and any other
accessories.
KEEP YOUR MOBILE:
1. Charged: Ensure your battery is
fully charged, and then completely
run it down before recharging.
Recharging too early causes your
battery to run out of power more
quickly.
2. Secure: For security reasons,
enable the PIN on your SIM Card
and Phone-lock on your phone to
avoid unauthorized used. These
security checks will also be activated
when the phone is power cycled.
You can check with your carrier or
the phone manual for the features
and also for information on blocking
your SIM card and phone IMEI
number if the phone is stolen. For
more information please see the
Security Tips located on the
AMTA Lost and Stolen website.
3. Protected: Make sure you use a
keypad lock to lock your phone.
Unplanned calls can cost a fortune
and even though your phone may
be in a safe place, such as in a bag,
your phone will still get knocked
around to a surprising
degree. Rough treatment can
damage electronic circuit boards
so avoid dropping or
unnecessarily shaking your phone.
4. Battery: Be safe with your batteries.
Use only genuine batteries from
your phone manufacturer and only
buy from authorized dealers. Going
for the cheap option of a counterfeit
battery can be dangerous.
5. Clean: Don't use harsh detergents,
cleaning solvents or harsh
chemicals to clean your phone.
Wipe only with a soft cloth.
6. Covered: a protective cover will
help repel dust and dirt, and prevent
scratches. Make sure the cover you
choose is of good quality. Low
quality covers with no air pockets
can damage you phone
by creating humidity inside the
cover.
7. Storing your phone: Always store
your phone in a dry place. Avoid
rain, high humidity and liquids. All
of these may contain minerals that
could corrode the electronic circuits.
8. At the right temperature: To
ensure a long life, keep your phone
in a stable temperature. Avoid
exposing your phone to liquid and/
or exposing your phone to extreme
temperature change from hot to
cold and vice versa. This might
create condensation and damage
the phone.

Buying Tips For Mobile Phone

* You may already have a budget in
mind as to how much you would
like to spend. Mobile Phones range

Make Acrobat Reader 6 load faster

Here's how to do it:
1. Go to C:\Program Files\Adobe\Acrobat 6.0\Reader (replace the C if you installed on another drive, like I did).
2. Create a new folder called plug_ins_disabled.
3. Move all files from the plug_ins folder to the plug_ins_disabled folder except EWH32.api, printme.api, and search.api. There should only be these 3 files in the plug_ins folder.
4. You're done.
